Boat cover pattern: templating and files
A boat cover pattern is taken off the boat, not drawn from drawings. Canvas shops pull it with clear film stretched over the hull and marked, or they unpick the old cover and use its panels. Both routes end in flat pieces, and flat pieces photograph into cutting files that repeat the same cover next season without pulling a pattern again.

Old cover or fresh template?
If the old cover exists and fitted, use it. Its panels carry the shape, the seam positions, the snap spacing and the shrink of years outdoors, and unpicking one costs an afternoon. Pull a fresh template when the cover is gone, rotted, or never fitted in the first place, and when hardware on the boat has changed since it was made.
The old cover
Photograph it fitted from every side before touching it, then unpick seam by seam and label each panel as it comes off. Faded thread lines are the seam record.
Film on the hull
Clear film stretched over the boat, marked at every edge, fastener and corner, then cut down and laid flat. The mark you make is the pattern, so mark deliberately.
Flatten before shooting
Vinyl and canvas panels curl after years on a boat. Press them under weights before photographing, or the curl shows up in the outline as a bump you did not cut.
Why keep the pattern as a file?
Because the template is the expensive part of the job and the part most likely to be lost. Pulling a cover off a boat is hours of work in the yard, and what it produces is a roll of marked film that lives in a corner of the shop, gets crushed, gets cut into for the next job, and eventually cannot be trusted.
A photographed panel becomes a DXF at true size, and the same DXF cuts the same panel in three years without going back to the boat. For a shop that covers the same models repeatedly, that is a library: the second cover of a model costs the cutting, not the templating.
What comes back?
A closed outline at true size, with notches wherever you cut them into the panel or drew them across the edge with a pen, and a grain line written into the file. Formats: DXF on the AAMA and ASTM standard for CAD and CNC cutting tables, HPGL PLT for plotters, and a Letter-tiled PDF for checking a small panel on paper before cutting expensive marine fabric.
Notches carry over
Cut a notch into the film or the panel, or draw a line across the edge with a pen. Both are found and written to the notch layer, so panels line up the same way in the file as on the bench.
Straight to the cutter
Internal lines go to the second pen in PLT, so a marker draws snap positions and seam lines instead of a knife cutting through the panel.
Correct in the browser
Points, curves and notches are all moved by hand before download. Correcting costs nothing and can be repeated as many times as needed.
What is not in the file?
Seam allowance, hem and binding take-up, the pull-in you want over a frame, zipper and snap positions unless you marked them, and any allowance for a fabric that will stretch when wet. The outline is the shape of what lies on the bench. A panel copied off a cover that has stretched for five seasons carries that stretch, and a shop that knows the boat usually takes some of it back by hand.
Questions from canvas shops
Can I photograph the cover on the boat?+
No. A cover on a boat is a curved surface, and a photograph of it has no flat shape to trace. Pull a template in film section by section, or take the cover off and unpick it.
Does it work on clear templating film?+
Only if the film reads as a shape against the background. Clear film on any surface has almost no contrast: lay it on paper of a contrasting colour, or transfer the marked outline to paper or card first and photograph that.
What about marine vinyl and Sunbrella?+
Both trace normally when the panel lies flat on a background of a different colour and the light is even. Avoid direct sun on a glossy vinyl panel: a reflection reads as an edge.
How big a panel can it handle?+
Whatever fits in one frame together with the sheet of Letter paper, flat and evenly lit. Larger panels are shot from further away, which costs resolution, so expect to correct a few more points by hand.
Will the file drive our cutting table?+
Yes. DXF is AAMA and ASTM with cut line, notches, grain and internal marks on separate layers, and PLT is standard HPGL with clean pen-up and pen-down moves.
Can we keep files for repeat customers?+
