Genuinely free pattern software exists, and it is open source: Seamly and Valentina draft patterns from measurements, and Inkscape edits vector shapes of any kind. What none of them do is get a paper pattern into the computer, which is the step most people are actually stuck on when they start looking.

Which programs are free, and for what?
Three worth knowing, all checked on their own pages 7 September 2026. They differ in what they take as input, and that is the thing to match against your situation before downloading anything.
Drafting from measurements
seamly.io states on its own page that Seamly is free and open source software. It builds patterns parametrically: you enter measurements and the pattern is constructed from them, so changing a measurement rebuilds the draft.
The same lineage
valentinaproject.bitbucket.io describes itself as open source pattern drafting software. Seamly grew out of the same project, so the two work in a similar parametric way.
General vector editing
inkscape.org is a free and open source vector editor. It knows nothing about garments, but it will edit an outline, and for simple flat shapes that is often all that is needed.
What none of the free programs do
They do not turn paper into geometry. Drafting software starts from measurements, and a vector editor starts from a shape you draw. If what you have is a paper pattern on the table, none of these will read it: you still have to enter it, either by clicking along the edge on a digitizing table, by tracing it manually over a scan, or by photographing it and having the outline traced for you.
That entry step is why studios charge separately for digitizing, per piece, and it is the step that stops most people who set out to do this for free.
What does this site do, then?
Only the entry step, and it is free while the demo runs. Photograph one flat piece with a sheet of Letter paper beside it, and the outline comes back at true size with notches and a grain line, in about a minute, in a browser tab with nothing to install. Then take that file into Seamly, Inkscape or any CAD you like, or print it and cut.
Not a drafting program
It will not build a pattern from measurements and has no blocks or slopers. If you are starting from a body rather than from paper, a drafting program is what you want.
Paper into a file
One photograph per piece, corrected by hand in the browser, downloaded as DXF, PDF and PLT. That is the whole scope, deliberately.
Use it anywhere
The DXF follows the AAMA and ASTM convention, so it opens in industrial CAD, in Inkscape as ordinary geometry, and in Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio for cutting.
What does free actually cost you?
Time, and it is worth counting before you start. Learning a parametric drafting program takes days rather than hours, because you are learning a way of constructing patterns as much as a piece of software. Tracing a scan by hand in a vector editor takes 20 to 40 minutes per piece and the result is only as good as your hand. Neither is a bad choice, but neither is quick, and people who expected quick usually give up rather than switch tools.
Questions about free tools
Is there free software that reads a paper pattern?+
Not in the drafting programs. They start from measurements or from shapes you draw. Getting paper into the computer is a separate step, done with a digitizing table, by hand over a scan, or from a photograph.
Is Seamly really free?+
Its own site states that Seamly is free and open source software, checked 7 September 2026. Valentina, from the same lineage, describes itself as open source pattern drafting software.
Can I use Inkscape instead?+
For editing an outline, yes, and it is free. It has no understanding of garments, so notches, grain lines and grading rules are things you handle yourself by convention rather than features you switch on.
Is this site free?+
While the demo runs, everything is free including downloads. Prices after the demo are not set yet, and nothing is charged before a result is on your screen.
Do I have to install anything?+
No. Uploading, tracing and correcting all happen in a browser tab. A free drafting program is a download and an install; this is not.
Can I combine the two?+
That is the sensible route. Photograph the paper piece here, then open the DXF in Seamly, Inkscape or your CAD to alter, grade or nest it.
